Criminal Defense

Many crimes directly or indirectly involve drugs, alcohol or mental health issues.

It is estimated that more than 40% of people who have gone to jail or prison suffer from mental illness, and countless more are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Even when the offense is not a "typical" drug or mental health offense, often there is an underlying drug, alcohol or mental health issue that needs to be addressed, both in and out of court.

I defend people, not "criminals."

When a person comes to me or I see them in jail, I listen carefully to see what I can do to help. In difficult cases, we need to vigorously litigate, investigate, file motions and do whatever it takes in order to get to the best results. At the same time, we should always be ready with a plan for treatment instead of punishment (or for treatment and a reduced sentence), even in the most serious cases.
